28 Weeks Later
Crikey. That was scary. The good kind of scary. It was
cybermule's idea to go, which is odd, as she is almost as scared of zombies as I am of daisies that are slightly too large. But I'm glad that I saw it, it took the premise from 28 days later in an interesting direction, and didn't lose too much of the rawness of the first film with the upscaled budget and cgi. And Robert Carlyle was excellent. At least, for the first half hour... :-)
Anyway, what I was getting to was that it had a really good soundtrack - in the cinematic Mogwai/Godspeed! style. Which was refreshing, as usually these days there are only three kinds of soundtrack.
1. A choir, singing in unison and fifths like someone taught them about "Carmina Burana", on a rising four chord sequence.
2. Generic mall metal-style guitars and drums. Sometimes combined with (1).
3. Wavy female airbrushed folky stuff, sounds a bit like Enya or Clannad or something.
Stand up 300 (for Sparta!) guilty of all three.
To be honest, it's getting rather lamentable. Is this seriously the best we can do? I mean, yes, there is Danny Elfman who does the Danny Elfman thing (celeste, cod-classical piano, dreamy strings, subtle electronica) and John Williams, who is doing exactly the same thing as he has been doing since Star Wars.
But please, make an effort people.
